An Exotic Village at The Slopes of Mount Inerie

Bena village is located on the slopes of Inerie mountain, so it presents an incredible landscape. In addition, the house design and tradition of the community are very unique, and entice anyone to find out. The entrance of Bena village is only from the north, While the southern part is the peak of the mountain and steep cliff edge.
The livelihoods of men are cultivated and women are weaved for sale to tourists or bring to Bajawa city. Being in the Bena village, you will see simple custom house design. The lives of citizens do not rely on modern technology like in the city. The tourists who come not only from local, but also from abroad, such as from the Netherlands, Japan, Belgium and other European countries.
The Nine Tribes Live in Harmony
Bena village has more than 45 houses facing each other. Its design extends from north to south and looks like a boat. There are nine tribes in Bena, namely Dizi, Dizi Azi, Wahto, Deru Lalulewa, Derama Solamae, Ngada, Khopa and Ago.
Each tribe occupies a certain level. The Bena tribe is at the middle level, considered the oldest tribe and founder of the village. Therefore, the name of this village is Bena. All tribes live in harmony and mutual respect. They always work together when building or renovating a traditional house.
When entering the terrace of the house, you will find a lot of buffalo horns, jaws, and pig’s fangs. All these things are displayed in front of the house, symbolizing the social status of the Bena people. The more the number, it is considered high social status of the house owner. The horns, jaws and fangs of the hogs hanged, usually derived from animals sacrificed during traditional ceremonies by each tribe.
Access Road to Bena Village
Bena village is located about 19 kilometres from Bajawa city. Travel to Bena Village can be reached by using a motorcycle or car. Access road is quite smooth, because the road is coated asphalt. but the road winding, many derivatives and steep climbs. If you come from Soa Kupang Airport, you can rent a car to Bajawa city. After arriving in the city, you just continue the journey about 30 minutes.
To visit Bena village, you do not have to pay for tickets. But you can donate when filling the guest book or buy works of loom made by the inhabitants. Other destinations adjacent to its location with Bena are the Bela village and the hot water of Soa. Hot water bath is located not far from the city of Bajawa. You can soak for relaxation and relieve fatigue. The hot water radiated from inside the earth and formed a small pond.
